What makes these mazes genuinely hard?

Every band must clear four gates: route length, false choices attached to the correct route, the depth of the longest wrong turn, and total branch-depth burden. Grid size sets the available space, but it cannot pass a maze by itself.

Long route

The only start-to-finish path must contain at least 360, 540, or 760 steps as the band rises.

Convincing wrong turns

We count off-route passages encountered along the answer path and measure how deeply the longest one runs.

Verified one-solution graph

Every cell is reachable and the passage graph is a tree, so there are no loops, sealed cells, or alternate answers.

A practical solving method

  1. Mark START and FINISH before tracing.
  2. Scan several junctions ahead and reject short dead ends visually.
  3. Draw lightly; at each junction, add a tiny dot to remember the choice.
  4. When a branch closes, return to the most recent undecided junction.
  5. If the entrance becomes crowded, reason backward from FINISH.
  6. Compare with the matching answer only after you stop making progress.

How the collection is checked

The build replays every answer step through an open wall, confirms all cells are connected, requires exactly cells minus one passages, and rejects duplicate wall signatures. It also compares signatures with the generic and kids' maze collections.
